In the vibrant musical landscape of their time, the brothers Joseph and Michael Haydn were both friends with their younger colleague, Mozart.
While the elder brother, Joseph Haydn, is often regarded as Mozart’s mentor, Joseph himself recognized Mozart’s undeniable genius and considered him a far superior composer. As a tribute, Mozart dedicated six string quartets to Joseph Haydn, a gesture that highlighted their deep-rooted mutual admiration and respect.

Mozart also demonstrated solidarity and friendship when he stepped in to assist Michael Haydn, who, struck by illness, was unable to complete a commission for violin/viola duets.

Michael Haydn made his mark as a distinguished composer of sacred music, and his Requiem left a lasting influence on Mozart’s own masterpiece. Michael was the first to compose high-quality music for the string quintet with two violas. Inspired by Michael, Mozart went on to write six of his own. Thus, the string quintet—characterized by its distinctive, sonorous sound—was born.

In short, the bonds between these three musical brothers, contemporaries, and fellow city residents were strong, and their mutual respect was profound.

PENTA has selected movements from Joseph Haydn’s Baryton Trios for three musicians, symbolizing the connection and brotherhood within PENTA itself.
